Rural Young Persons Transition for Further Education Network

by | Jul 31, 2017 | Bush Voices

At this time of the year many rural and remote young people are considering their options after completing their schooling – whether that be to go to University, a training organisation in a regional or metropolitan location, the armed forces or employment away from their own community.

This often means that these young people, along with their families,  are required to be involved in many trips, over a number of weekends, to check out the various options they would like to consider in assisting them in achieving their future dream.

The Rural Youth Ambassador Alumni, which comprise approximately 100 rural young people who have been involved in the Country Education Partnerships Rural Youth Ambassador program have developed a great initiative to support these young people, and their families, who are keen to explore their future options in regional or capital cities by providing a valuable, rural friendly, information on a range of further education organisations across many states.

The perks for utilising these energetic and informative rural young people include:

  • they can provide a genuine sharing of experiences of the transition from a rural/remote community to a larger population centre for further study or employment from a rural young persons perspective – what is like to move away from home, what is living on campus like, what is university like, etc;
  • the opportunity that rural and remote young people are able to see a number of further study options over one weekend rather than having to travel for multiple weekends;
  • the Rural Youth Ambassadors Alumni cover numerous universities and other education organisations in Victoria, South Australia, Canberra and regional New South Wales who are willing to provide information, and a rural friendly contact, in each of these organisations;
  • it is free – the Rural Youth Ambassador Alumni are offering this valuable service on a volunteer basis.
