Forum: Post-Compulsory Education in a Rural Context

The 2019 CEP Rural Youth Ambassadors (RYA) are preparing to wrap-up their year with an education forum looking at the provision of post-compulsory programs within rural Victorian communities.

The forum will encapsulate this year’s RYA agenda, in which the ambassadors have conversed with state ministers and education sector personnel about ways to improve post-compulsory program access, and admission to combined academic and vocational curriculum (VCE, VCAL, VET, SBA).

To be held in early December, the forum will cater for rural educators, students and interested people exploring two key questions:

“How can education sectors and schools provide the post-compulsory program options that young people within rural communities would like to have?”

AND

“How can we support rural young people in being able to undertake a combination of academic programs (VCE), vocational programs (VET, SBA and VCAL) and early university programs to ensure they gain the skills and knowledge for the future pathways they would like to pursue?”

The ambassadors will then present their findings from the forum to Education Minister James Merlino, who has identified the areas of secondary education and post compulsory education as key focuses for 2020.

To this end, we invite you, your staff, and your community to join the ambassadors at this one-day forum, helping to shape the feedback to the Minister.

Program:

The one-day program will involve a number of presentations, including the outcomes of discussions held by Rural Youth Ambassadors over the past 12 months, and the opportunity for participants to be involved in facilitated workshops.

We are pleased to have Dr Jennifer Jackson from the Mitchell Institute on board. Dr Jackson will share some of the work and research conducted by the Institute in recent years, concerning post compulsory education.

Representatives from the Department of Education and Training will also be present to engage in discussions, and in the afternoon we will be joined by the Deputy Secretary, School Education Programs & Support, Stephen Gniel.

Workshop groups will allow participants to share their experiences of post compulsory education provision within rural communities, and consider how the current challenges faced can be overcome.

Outcomes:

The Rural Youth Ambassadors will compile a report from the day’s discussions to be presented to the Minister for Education, and senior education sector personnel.

The report will also be circulated to rural education communities.
