What is the Fairfax Youth Initiative?

The Fairfax Youth Initiative is a creative project for schools and students in our Murray Mallee region.  Through Fairfax, artists deliver workshops in schools, students make creative works, and all schools and students from across our region come together for a week in Swan Hill in September.

The Fairfax Youth Initiative welcomes young people from towns like Birchip, Manangatang, Bendigo, Swan Hill and Sea Lake. The Fairfax Youth Initiative also crosses into neighbouring NSW towns, such as Red Cliffs and Tooleybuc. It is recognised as being pivotal in keeping young people in school and connected with their wider communities.

The key stages of the 2019 Fairfax Youth Initiative:

Schools are invited to participate in three stages of Fairfax:

Stage One (August/ September)

Four days of in-school workshops. An artist works with a group of students at your school to make a new creative work and to teach new skills to your students.

Stage Two: (September 16 to September 19)

The Fairfax Week in Swan Hill. All students and all schools come together in Swan Hill. The Fairfax week is a truly phenomenal experience for students and staff. Watch this video to understand more about the week.

Stage Three: (September 19 in the evening)

A final performance event at the Swan Hill Town Hall showcases all of the new creative works that have been made. This event is inclusive and open to parents, friends and all in the wider community.

What we need to make #FYI2019 a success:

Space is limited. Make sure you are in the first eight teachers from across the region to nominate your school to be part of this program.

  • As a Fairfax Teacher, you will facilitate your students’ experience. Simply sign-up your school and recruit eight students to become part of the 2019 Fairfax team. You will then become a Team Leader during Fairfax week, and join us in Swan Hill supporting your students and the program from September 16 to September 19.

  • In 2019, we are expanding Fairfax from just theatre. This means that, as well as theatre, schools can nominate to explore:

    • Clowning

    • Music and Percussion

    • Film

  • Teachers can nominate multiple areas of interest.

  • Teachers will work with Fairfax staff to coordinate dates for the in-school artist workshop, which will take place in August/ September, 2019.

  • For more information you can contact Sharon Brinkman.

Costs involved:

  • In 2019 the Registration Fee will be $600 (inc. GST) covering each registered group of up to eight (8) students and one leader. This fee includes accommodation costs for three nights in Swan Hill, all meals from dinner (Monday 17th) to dinner (Thursday 19th), and delivery of all workshops – both in schools and in Swan Hill during Fairfax Week.
