eKids Rural Express is a program developed to support and enhance the learning of talented students within rural communities across rural Victoria. This term has seen the beginning of a specific project focusing on the science learning area involving schools from across the North East part of the state.
A number of buddying scientists are about to participate in a range of exciting science activities provided through the use of a blended learning approach. These years 5 and 6 students have all shown they have a talent or real passion for learning science and want to extend their learning in this area by working with other buddying scientists.
These students will be involved in a wide variety of learning activities that include web based learning units; online presentations through video conferencing and elluminate sessions; involvement of guest speakers and wiz bang scientists, and working with other students from a number of rural schools.
A fantastic area of the program is the involvement of Quantum Victoria – a specialist science school attached to Latrobe University. Teachers with expertise in the science area will be providing a number of creative and engaging units for students to be involved. An example is the design and then production of a three dimensional vehicle. The involvement of Quantum will also see the eKids Rural Express students having the opportunity to spend a couple of days at the Quantum facilities in Bundoora to participate in a range of challenging and exciting science activities and labs as well as have access to a group of highly skilled science teachers.
This exciting project is a partnership between the Country Education Project, Quantum Australia, DEECD, Sandhurst Catholic Education Office and the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust.
