Apply Now: Spirit of Democracy Study Tour 2019-2020
Applications are now open for the Premier’s Spirit of Democracy Study Tour, a curriculum immersion program based on the civics and citizenship learning area.
The Study Tour, which was announced as part of the Victorian Government’s 2018 re-election campaign, offers up to 22 students the opportunity to travel to Greece to learn more about the home of democracy.
Students will be chosen through the Spirit of Democracy Prize — an essay competition in which pupils must write about democracy, drawing on the learnings of classical Greek thinkers, such as Plato and Aristotle.
The Prize is open to students in years 9, 10 and 11 from government, Catholic and independent schools in Victoria, with four teacher chaperone positions also available.
Delving Deeper into Democracy
The Study Tour offers successful students and teachers an opportunity to explore the origins of democracy, with an aim of better understanding the influence of democracy on contemporary Victorian and Australian society.
Based on the intercultural and ethical capabilities in the civics and citizenship curriculum, the Study Tour offers students and teacher chaperones the opportunity to delve deeply into the principles of Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle.
