Werrimull Student Realises his Dreams

Corey Kirkham from Werrimull in the far north west of Victoria (population of 140 and a school enrolment of 60) is one of nine lucky Australian young people to be invited to undertake his Year 11 and 12 studies within the United World Colleges in New Mexico, USA.

With a scholarship provided by the United World Colleges, Australia, Corey will join many other young people from across the globe in his studies over the next two years.

He started his course in August this year and he believes it will assist him fulfilling his dream of studying maths and physics at a USA university that hopefully will eventuate in him becoming an astronaut. He is accommodated onsite and is currently sharing with a young person from Afghanistan.

“My initial plan was to finish my VCE, hopefully get a good ATAR and study science at a university”

“What I want to do now is undertake a IB course and give my best chance to undertake university study in physics and mathematics so that I can end up in NASA.”

Having just undertaken his mid term exams, and successfully negotiated them, he is now involved in the variety of activities that are associated with Thanksgiving – a new experience for him.

As part of his studies, students are also expected to undertake various projects. Corey has been working with a number of other students in designing and building a facility for a community organisation within the local community.

The support role that teachers from the Werrimull College provided Corey in encouraging him to “follow his dream” resulted in him applying for the scholarship – and eventually being awarded the only full scholarship within Australia. Kelly Morrison and other staff from the school were instrumental in supporting Corey in checking the possibilities out, accessing the scholarship and encouraging him to “chase his dream”.

Well done Corey, and we look forward to seeing you flying into space one day.
